The Abbot of Pechón
With this name is known in Espinosa a manuscript carried out around 1845 by D. Nicolas Barquín Arana, natural of the Village and that with the course of the years obtained the said ecclesiastical dignity of Abbot in the village of Pechón (Cantabria). Said D. Nicolas, in some “memories that serve to the posterity” as indicate in its first sheet, it does an itinerary through the history of the Village and its inhabitants, being of great interest the central part of the writing, dedicated to what happened in Spain, the province of Burgos and, fundamentally, during the terrible days of the battle of Espinosa, that lived in the first person since its house in the centre of the village. The manuscript has been kindly placed at the disposal of these modest “historians” by its owner, Dª Mª del Socorro Samperio, jealous guardian of its integrity for many years.

In those memories interesting historic data on the present units are contributed, development of the battle, historic characters with the ones who lived together (a part of the Spanish greater state was lodged in its house) … But perhaps the most shockest is the meticulous description of the occupation of the Village by the French and its consequences. Under our modest point of view is a story enough objective of the situation, it does not continue the line of animosity of the so recurrent enemy in the historiography of the epoch, considering that there was good and bad people in both sides.

Enclosed to the statement of the manuscript (it only will be published for the time being what is concerning to the battle) facsimiles of existing documentation in the City Hall they will be published, as well as the record of service of the Lieutenant of the Regiment of the Princess D. Francisco Juárez, present in the battle, and that has yielded for such end D. Luis Revuelta, great-great-grandson of the mentioned soldier and possessor of said documentation.

Though we claim that across Publishing Everest, which will entrust of his impression and distribution, it comes to most of the bookshops of Spain, we will put to dispositionshortly a service of sale by Internet , which we will announce opportunely from these pages.
